Super-Size That Lifter!
by Joe Landsverk (adapted from WPG Engineer's article)

If you are like most of us in the world of materials handling, you are finding that you have a call for handling bigger and bigger materials. Often these materials are not just large but involve other unique conditions, requiring unique handling solutions. All Wood’s Powr-Grip needs is a smooth surface to attach to and we can help you out. Here are some examples of solutions we have created:
What happens when you want to lift something big, and it has smooth areas divided by raised rib areas? Believe it or not, a vacuum lifter from Wood’s Powr-Grip is the answer. You may recognize this load as the material for curtain walls. Pictured is the lower half of a lifter designed for attaching to a material with deep mullions. This lifter has a 5-1/2" [14 cm] clearance between the material surface and the pad frame, along with a capacity of 2500 lbs [1135 Kg].
How about installing that big window under an overhanging obstruction? What about a reversed-angle installation? These particular circumstances most often occur when you install airport control tower windows. We have often been called upon to provide vacuum lifters for this situation, such as the PT2811LDCS seen here. In this instance, Wood’s built the lifter as an end effector for a very large “C” frame, working in conjunction with others. This lifter was designed to lift 4725 lbs [2145 kg].
If your needs are less exotic but you still need sophisticated load manipulation, a large Power Rotator/Tilter may fit the bill. If you don’t deal with big material all the time, then the lifter can be designed with the flexibility to handle smaller loads, as well. You might consider movable vacuum pads, removable vacuum pads, or telescoping pad arms, which provide for the flexibility of pad location that you need.
Whether you are lifting material that is big or small, flat or even curved , you know that a vacuum lifter can help you get the job done. Here at Wood’s Powr-Grip, we have the experience and capability to build what you need.
